Nothing is as challenging as feeding your family a healthy diet for a whole week. Many people know that whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, are nutritious and healthy. But many children do not want to consume healthy food as they would instead consume junk food.
The responsibility of what a child eats, when, and how lies with you. Your child will only be responsible for how much they consume. You can use the following tips to improve the eating habits of your family:
Try and Establish Healthy Food Values
You can guide your children to healthy relationships with their food by establishing essential values like eating together, eating local, as well as clean eating. You need to decide on what is significant to you when you are creating your weekly menu.
Determine what to prioritize. Should it be:
- Type of ingredients used
If cost is the most crucial factor, you can always try and volunteer at the local cooperative markets. The markets often work with consumers in a bid to ensure that the cost of farm produce remains low. Certain markets also offer discounts to volunteers.
Provide the Family with a Broad Variety of Nutritious Food Items
It is prudent to add new items to the weekly family menu to go along with the familiar standbys. Do not let your children sway your decisions. Just because they do not enjoy a specific food item does not mean that they should not take it every once in a while.
Try and encourage them to taste different food items. You need to be subtle when dealing with children who are picky eaters:
- If they do not like certain fruits—dice and chop the fruits before offering them to the kids. You could also use the fruits when making pancakes, salads, or muffins.
- Food should never be used as a reward for good behavior. Doing so leads to a complicated relationship with food when the children start to grow.
- Do not allow your kids to dictate what the family gets to eat. Keep in mind that your house is not a restaurant. As such, you should not provide more than a single meal choice at any one time.
- Do not force the young ones to eat food they do not like, or to overeat food. It can impair their judgment, making it impossible for them to know when they have become satisfied.
Aim to Establish a Family Dining Routine
Routines are essential in influencing the social, cognitive, and emotional development of a child. Children will respond positively to routines and schedules.
You may not have grasped this, but most kids like to know in advance what will happen at a certain time. Routines and schedules, therefore, make the children feel secure and loved.
Establishing family dining routines will, therefore, encourage them to look forward to meal times. Children are also more likely to appreciate their food when it is served at the same time each day.
